A PERSONAL COLLECTION OF RUSSIAN IKONS
From the introduction of Christianity
into Russia in the 10th century to the advent of state sanctioned atheism
in
1917, the Eastern Orthodox Church historically has played an important part in the everyday
lives of Russians.
Despite the intervention of Communist rule, the ideas and precepts of the Church and its
Byzantine heritage as
defined in Russia continue to thrive within the hearts and minds of millions of people.
The ikons and religious memorabilia
shown here are from the personal collection of Dr. Idris Traylor, Executive
Director for the Office of International Affairs, and Director of the International
Cultural Center. Among the
artifacts displayed are representations of Christ, Mary, John and some of the more than
300 saints within the
pantheon of the Russian Orthodox Church. The
imagery and symbolism found on brass crosses and bells, on
lacquered eggs and resplendent painted ikons suggest a rich historical tapestry inspired
by centuries of
kinship
between the Church and its people. |
