FR301 Waggoner, W.T., Estate Ranches

Contains images of ranch life including Hereford cattle in pasture and pens, cowboys herding cattle, cowboys mounted and preparing to mount horses, horses (individual, heards, and remudas),stone entrance and house, cutting horses and riders, branding and inoculation of calves, cooks and chuckwagon tent, cowboys photographed individually and in groups working cattle, grain elevators, and farm equipment. In 1910, W. T. Waggoner split his Vernon, Texas ranch into three parcels of 100,000 acres to give to each of his three children. His son, E. Paul Waggoner, ran the cattle and ranching operation on the estate, as well as the old 3-D Stock Farm near Arlington, Texas. Also referred to as the Three D Ranch due to the letter "D" being used three times to create the ranch's brand, Waggoner Ranch was one of the best known ranches in the Southwest and one of the largest ranches in Texas.

Includes photo of Mr. and Mrs. R. T. Alexander on their 65th anniversary, and son, Ted , who inherited the ranch operations near Canadian, Texas in the 1960s. R. T. Alexander was born in the Hill Country of Texas and first went to the Panhandle region in 1885 with his father, a Presbyterian minister, who contracted pneumonia and died in 1886. R. T., then 13 years old, his mother and four siblings lived for a time in a dugout. Alexander bought his first beef cattle in 1891 at age 18, and continually increased and improved his herd into the1960s.

Also includes images of Angus cattle and mixed cattle, a rodeo arena, and a painting near Jacksboro, Texas. Owned by Linford A. Worthington, the ranch was located a few miles north of Jacksboro, Texas.

Owned by Wayne H. Hammon, the ranch was located six miles east of Wichita Falls, Texas, and raised Hereford cattle.

FR313 Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge

Includes various images of men posing, men on horseback, scenery, and buffalos, longhorn cattle in pasture. The refuge, operated under the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, came into being in 1905 when President Theodore Roosevelt set aside a large tract of land as a game reserve. Wild horses and Longhorn cattle were among some of the animals that were maintained on the southern Oklahoma game reserve.

Contains various images of the ranch near Morrilton, Arkansas, and includes the owner, Winthrop Rockefeller, showing Santa Gertrudis cattle, people at auctions, auctioneers, people socializing and observing cattle, Santa Gertrudis cattle in steel pens, and in pasture, a swimming pool, ranch sign, and buildings. Winthrop Rockefeller moved to Arkansas from New York in 1953 and entered the cattle business there, concentrating on the breeding of Santa Gertrudis cattle. In the spring of 1963, Rockefeller added to his holdings when he purchased the Turner Hereford Ranch from Roy Turner of Sulphur, Oklahoma.

Includes various images of a large stone residence, mountain scenery, wooden fences and farm buildings, Hereford cattle in pasture, man and woman posing for picture, horse, trees and road, stone post office marker, log house, and grazing bison. Owned in 1952 by William J. Gourley, the ranch was created from three separate land purchases and operated on more than 400,000 acres with its main headquarters in Vermejo Park, New Mexico. Known also as the Casa Grande, the ranch house at Vermejo Park was built in 1903 and had over 100 rooms. The original WS Ranch was one of Gourley's three purchases and its headquarters were at Cimarron, New Mexico.
