April 12, 2008 - The first annual "Horny Toad" Cook-off will be held at Copper Breaks State Park in Quanah, Texas, which combines a prairie-style potluck and cowboy poetry.  For more information, call ranger Carl Hopper at the park during regular business hours at (940) 839-4331.

April 26, 2008 - "A Kiowa’s Odyssey: A Sketchbook from Fort Marion Symposium" at the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum's Hazlewood Lecture Hall from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

April 26, 2008 - the 38th Annual Ranch Day at the National Ranching Heritage Center in Lubbock, Texas, includes the dedication of the Pitchfork Ranch Cookhouse. This event is free to the public.  More information can be found here.

Texas cities celebrating anniversaries this year:

Coleman County will be celebrating its' 150th birthday in 2008. Sesquicentennial events will take place all year long.

Beginning in March 2008 and running through 2009, Lubbock will be hosting numerous events to mark its centennial. The opening ceremony, which will be held in the United Spirit Arena, is scheduled for March 2, 2008, and will include Coach Bobby Knight as one of the participants. Other scheduled events include an art show in May, 2008, and a Cotton Ball in either July or August of 2009. More details to come.


If you're out and about, here are some interesting exhibitions to check out:

Canyon, Texas - "Samuel Colt: Arms, Art, Invention" will be showing at the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum until from May 24 - September 1, 2008.  Click here for more details.

La Porte, Texas - Cartography buffs will enjoy "Drawn from Experience: Landmark Maps of Texas at the San Jacinto Museum of History" which will be on display at the San Jacinto Museum from March 31, 2007-March 31, 2008. More information on the exhibit is available in this press release.

Lubbock, Texas - The National Ranching Heritage Center will be exhibiting 62 paintings from the Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library's holdings of Frank Reaugh's pastels.  The exhibit, entitled "The Pastel Range: Frank Reaugh, Range Historian," will rum from the end of October through the first week of February, 2008.

Lubbock, Texas - The Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library is exhibiting some of its holdings from the Crossroads of Music collection until July, 2008. Exhibited are photographs and artifacts from Alan Munde and Joe Carr, Jesse “Guitar” Taylor, and the Stubb’s Music Venue.  Click here for more details.

The Quanah Acme & Pacific Railroad Museum in Quanah, Texas, is now open to the public. Click here for details.

The "ghost town" of Medicine Mound, once privately owned by Myna Potts and now being preserved by an non-profit group, welcomes visitors to this unique site.  More information can be found here.

The Texas' Last Frontier Museum in Morton, Texas, has been officially designated as the headquarters of the new Trails of the Last Frontier segment of the statewide Texas Buffalo Soldiers Heritage Trail. The museum and Cochran County Historical Commission will be sponsoring a series of events in 2007 to celebrate the inauguration of the trail.

The American Wind Power Center and Museum in Lubbock, Texas, is a 28-acre facility which has the most comprehensive collection of historic windmills in the world.  Its website gives more information on the types of windmills it has.
